Why Recovery Slows Down After 40, and What Helps
Why workouts take longer to bounce back from after 40, and what East Valley adults can do about it, from the doctors at Restore Health in Mesa, AZ.

The weather finally breaks in October, and the East Valley comes back outside. The trails at Usery Mountain and San Tan fill up, the canal paths get busy with riders, and the courts are packed again. For a lot of people, it's also when they notice that a hard week takes longer to bounce back from than it used to.
That's normal, and it isn't a sign you need to slow down for good. It's a sign the body needs a slightly different plan. Here is what changes, and what we see help most at Restore Health in Mesa.
What changes as we get older
- Muscle. We slowly lose muscle starting in our 30s, and the loss speeds up later in life without strength training to push back.
- Tendons and connective tissue. They get stiffer and heal more slowly, which is why the same injury takes longer to settle down at 45 than at 25.
- Hormones. Testosterone in men drops gradually with age. Women go through bigger shifts in perimenopause and menopause. Both affect energy, sleep, muscle and recovery.
- Sleep. Deep sleep tends to get lighter and shorter, and that's when much of the body's repair happens.
None of this happens overnight, which is why it's easy to miss until it adds up.
What helps
Lift something heavy twice a week. Strength training is the best way to hold on to muscle and keep your bones strong. It doesn't have to take long.
Make your easy days easy. Most people who feel run down are going medium-hard every day. Fewer hard sessions with true easy days in between usually leads to better results.
Protect your sleep. Aim for seven to nine hours, with a steady bedtime. Watch late caffeine and alcohol, which both cut into deep sleep.
Eat enough protein, and spread it out. A decent amount at each meal does more for muscle repair than one big serving at dinner.
Hydrate for where you live. Even in the fall, the Arizona air is dry. Being a little dehydrated makes everything feel harder.
Deal with nagging injuries early. A sore tendon or joint that keeps coming back is easier to treat now than later. Read how we approach training injuries and options like PRP injections.
When it's more than age
Sometimes slow recovery has a cause you can find and fix. Low iron, low vitamin D, thyroid problems and low hormones all show up as fatigue, poor sleep and workouts that never seem to get easier. A standard physical doesn't always catch them.
At Restore Health, we start with a full lab panel and go through the results with you, then build a plan around your training, your schedule and what you want to keep doing. If your labs point to low hormones, hormone therapy may be part of that plan. If they don't, we'll tell you.
If you live in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler or anywhere in the East Valley and want to keep doing what you love, read about our performance and longevity care or book a visit.
